The wife of Cleveland police officer Matthew Blades has paid tribute to the husband, father, and public servant she lost in a devastating crash that killed six people. Blades, 37, died alongside fellow officer Tom Clough, 38, in the early hours of August 22 while the pair were carrying out police duties.
The officers had been looking for a vehicle believed to be using cloned or false registration plates. At about 3:39 a.m., the other car crossed onto the wrong side of a dual carriageway and struck their police vehicle. Blades, Clough, and all five young men traveling in the other car were pronounced dead at the scene.
The five occupants were later identified as Michael Robert Cahill, 23, Jacob Matusiak, 23, Theo Rae, 17, Cole Robert Worthy, 17, and Makai Saddington, 18. Their deaths, together with those of the two officers, left several families facing sudden and profound loss.
Blades’s wife described him as her beloved husband, closest friend, and a devoted father to their two young sons. She also remembered him as a cherished son and brother, a perfect son-in-law, and an uncle who brought fun to the family. He had appeared at Teesside Magistrates’ Court in July, and social-media clips reportedly showed earlier encounters involving police chases.
