On the remote and windswept shores of Marajó Island, located at the mouth of the Amazon River in northern Brazil, the natural world recently presented a puzzle so surreal that it seemed to belong in the pages of a fantasy novel. Deep within the island’s thick mangrove canopy, far removed from the crashing waves of the Atlantic Ocean, locals stumbled upon a sight that defied all logic. Resting quietly among the gnarled roots, thick mud, and dense tropical foliage was the body of a young humpback whale.
The initial discovery sent shockwaves through the local community. To stumble upon a creature of the deep ocean floor while navigating the humid, shadow-draped pathways of a tropical rainforest is an experience that challenges a person’s grasp on reality. Measuring roughly eight meters in length, the young calf lay perfectly intact, its dark, sleek skin contrasting sharply with the vibrant green ferns and tangled brown roots surrounding it.
