For more than four decades, Shelley Fabares and Mike Farrell shared a life that extended far beyond their careers in Hollywood.
Fabares, remembered for The Donna Reed Show, One Day at a Time, and Coach, and Farrell, widely known for his role as B.J. Hunnicutt on MASH*, married in 1984. Their relationship continued through decades of changing careers, family responsibilities and difficult personal moments.
Fabares died on August 22, 2026, in Los Angeles at age 82. Her family said she died surrounded by loved ones. Farrell, now 87, remains her surviving husband.
Two Familiar Faces From Television
Shelley Fabares became a household name at a young age through The Donna Reed Show, where she played Mary Stone. She later appeared in several films with Elvis Presley and continued building a television career, eventually taking on the role of Christine Armstrong on Coach. Her work on the series earned her two Primetime Emmy nominations.
Mike Farrell became widely recognized through MASH*, where he played Capt. B.J. Hunnicutt. His career also included work in television, film and theater.
Although both were successful performers, their relationship was largely separate from the image of Hollywood glamour often associated with celebrity couples.
A Marriage That Lasted More Than 40 Years
Fabares and Farrell married on December 31, 1984, and remained together for more than four decades.
Their relationship included both ordinary family life and challenging periods. The couple supported one another through significant personal responsibilities, including Fabares’ serious health problems.
In the late 1990s, Fabares was diagnosed with progressive liver failure and eventually underwent a liver transplant in 2000 after spending a lengthy period on the transplant waiting list. She later spoke about how the experience changed her perspective on life, while Farrell remained by her side.
Their long marriage therefore wasn’t simply a Hollywood romance built around appearances. It included years of shared responsibilities, family experiences and difficult circumstances.
A Life Beyond the Spotlight
Fabares’ later years also reflected her commitment to family and causes that mattered to her.
She was involved in raising awareness about Alzheimer’s disease after her mother developed the condition. The couple also made decisions about their home and family life that allowed them to better support her mother.
These details offer a different picture of two familiar Hollywood names. Away from television sets and public appearances, much of their life centered on family, companionship and supporting one another.
Mike Farrell’s Tribute
Following Fabares’ death, Farrell and her family shared a statement remembering her as a source of love, strength, laughter and comfort.
The statement emphasized that although millions knew Fabares because of her acting career, those closest to her remembered her for her warmth, loyalty, humor and the relationships she built throughout her life.
Farrell also later shared a photograph of himself with Fabares, offering another glimpse into the personal side of their decades together.
